How Blackjack is Played

Blackjack is truly one of the best card games – it is enjoyable and its rules are so easy to comprehend.  Blackjack is also called 21, Vignt-et-un or Pontoon and is widely played over the Internet and in casinos.  This card game has plenty of variations, but they still all have the same objective and it is to get hold of cards that sum up to 21 or a little lesser to beat the opponent, which is the dealer.

You do not have to strategize against the other players-  you only have to focus on your cards and of the dealer’s hand.  It is important that you go over the rules of a particular blackjack variation before betting real money in casinos because if you only have a little knowledge about the type of blackjack you’re playing, the dealer can easily beat you and take all your money.

The Basic Rules in Blackjack

-       To get the values of your cards, you have to add them up until it totals to less than 21 or 21.

-       With the cards that you have, you have the option to hit or stand.  Hit means you want another card or cards and to stand means, you’re okay with the hand you’ve got.

-       Before the game starts, all players place their bets.

-       The objective of the game is to have cards that should sum up to 21 or a little under in order for you to beat the dealer.  However, if your hand goes over 21, then it is a bust and bust means that you lose the game.

-       Blackjack is traditionally played with a single deck, but in casinos, they use multiple decks to prevent players from using the card counting strategy.

The Respective Values of the Cards

In blackjack, the suits don’t matter at all.  The 2 to 10 cards are counted as what their value indicates,  while the face cards, which are the Jack, Queen and the King, are valued at 10.  The value of an Ace is flexible.  It can either be counted as 1 or 11 and it depends on the player on how he is going to make use of it.  If you get an Ace and you count it as 11, your hand is called a soft hand; if you are not holding an Ace or if you do, but you count it as 1, it is known as a hard hand.

How Blackjack Starts

  1. Players assemble in a blackjack table that can have a maximum of six players.  Before sitting on table, make sure that you know the variation of the blackjack you’ll be playing as well as the stakes and the number of decks.
  2. Place your bet on the designated area on the table.

  1. The dealer gives out two cards to each player faced up, while he also gets two cards, but with one card faced down.

  1. If you think that the dealer has a blackjack, you have the option to make an insurance bet.  This can simply be understood by saying that you are playing with the dealer’s hand and your hand.  If the dealer has blackjack, you will be paid a rate of 2:1.  However, if the dealer fails to get a blackjack, you lose your insurance bet.

  1. With the cards laid down in front of you, you must decide if you should take the risk to continue or to just stand up.  This is the point where the strategies of blackjack enter the scene.  The risk in blackjack is when you go over 21 and instantly lose.

Different Options in Blackjack

Hit

After you are given your cards and if you are not satisfied with its value, you may ask for another card from the dealer, and that’s what’s called a hit.  But you should be careful not to bust.  This is one of the biggest risks that you sometimes have to take in blackjack, so you must have an enormous knowledge on the strategies of this game.

Stand

On the other hand, if you are satisfied with the value of your hand, you have the option to stand.  If you choose this, you are taking away the risk of getting a bust.  The hand that you have will be your hand until the game is concluded.

Split Pairs

If you have been given a pair as your initial cards, you may split the two cards and play two different hands and two separate bets.  The bet that you should place in your other hand should be similar to your original bet.  Your cards may be split if you have, for example, two eights or two sevens, but not a Jack and a King since they only have the same value and they’re not really a pair.

Even Money

If you have a blackjack and the dealer holds an up card of Ace assuming that he also has a blackjack, you have the option to take an Even Money.  With this option, you shall be paid out a rate of 1:1.  When the dealer also gets a blackjack and you didn’t take this option, there will just be a tie or a push and you will not gain anything.

Double Down

If you think you can beat the dealer with the cards that you have, you may choose to double down your bet.  With this, you are given the option to get one more card.  Casinos have different rules with this kind of option.

Surrender

If you have a hand which you think can’t beat the dealer, you may just simply surrender and just wait for the next round.  When you surrender, you also lose half of your bet and then your cards will be removed from the table.

How to Win in Blackjack

  1. If you have a blackjack with your initial cards, you instantly win.  You then are paid 1.5 of your bet.

  1. There is a push or a tie in case the dealer, likewise, has a blackjack with his initial cards.

  1. You instantly win when the dealer gets a bust.

  1. If your card has a value higher than the dealer, you are paid 1:1.
